PC Security

PC Security- An Alarming Issue

After a month of handwork and sleepless nights, you finish your project report. Obviously it is the most important thing for you but the next moment it isn’t there! Your computer is hacked! It wasn’t secured in the first place? It is a very common mistake people commit, they don’t keep a check on PC security.

Some of us don’t think PC security as an important issue but you know what? It is really an important and concerning issue. And now that the hackers are becoming smarter day by day, you should too. You just can’t let anyone steal your project or any sensitive information in a minute! Everyone out there must know about PC security. What is it? Why is it needed and how can you provide security to your PC?

PC Security

So the first question is, “what is PC security”? Now to answer this here is a small definition that says PC security or you can call it cybersecurity are the technologies used for keeping PCs, laptops, and other personal devices on a network safe. It deals with private as well as public networks. In order to protect your PC from all the malicious attacks and damage, you need to start working on it from now.

Now the second question, “why PC security is important?” It is critically important to have PC security because:

  1. It provides protection to organizations and individuals from data breaches/
  2. Provides data confidentiality and secure access.
  3. The data security of digital assets like servers, laptops, desktops, and networks is ensured.
  4. It mainly secured data during the transmission process.

Any system can become a target for hackers because of its vulnerabilities. There are three main ingredients or factors of vulnerability.

  • Flaw in system
  • Access of attacker to the flaw
  • Hacker exploiting that flaw.

These vulnerabilities are also called attack surfaces which by the name, clearly states that this is making way for the hackers to attack. There are many ways for hackers to attack like data breaching, spoofing, eavesdropping, back doors, denial of service attack, tampering, and many more.

PC Protection:

Okay, so the final question, “how to protect your PC”? computer security can be a complex issue for some people but they should know it’s not that complex. Some people can also go for advanced protection like PC Cleaner software, etc. But first, you need to know is how the basic things can actually help you in PC security.

  • Using anti-virus and anti-spyware software:

If your PC is connected to the internet then it is prone to malicious attacks. There can be any online threat, be it virus or any other attacks like malware, Trojan or ransomware attacks. Well for that you can use anti-virus, it may not be hundred percent effective but still a good option.

Spyware is the type of software that can secretly infect your computer. It will gather information from your system and send it to the third party or the attackers. Even if spyware is in your computer you don’t have to worry about it as there are plenty of anti-spyware softwares that will detect and remove the spyware.

  • Password protecting your software and locking the screen:

If you want to keep your apps and system safe you can password protect them. But make sure that you don’t use same password for all the apps or you can try two step verification I.e, combining your password with either emails or messages. You can even lock or computer or laptop screens with PIN codes so that only you or some limited people can access your device.

  • Data encryption:

We all have some sensitive information on our devices that are worth protecting. They can be anything, from passwords to identification details to photographs, everything is important. So to protect it from the attackers you can encrypt your data. Encrypted data can be accessed only after decryption which cannot be done by the attacker. There are many tools for data encryption and can help you to encrypt things on your computer like files, communication, accounts and online traffic.

  • Using VPN:

VPN or Virtual Private Network is one of the most preferred ways of increasing your system security, mainly when you are browsing internet. When you are using VPN all your internet traffic is encrypted and tunneled through a mediating server which is in a separate location. It masks your IP so that your activity can no longer be monitored by ISP.

  • Adjusting your browser settings:

You can enable and adjust the level of privacy and security while browsing as most of the browsers have this option. It lowers the risk of malware infections reaching and attacking your systems. You should choose a safe browser and keep it updated.
